Nonprofit news: Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation donates life-saving equipment to 15 groups

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation donated $214,761 worth of life-saving equipment to 15 public safety organizations in North Florida before the Jacksonville Jaguars game against the Tennessee Titans.

Equipment was donated to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Hilliard Volunteer Fire Department; Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program; LaCrosse Fire Department; Neptune Beach Police Department; Ocala Fire Rescue; PACE Center for Girls, Clay County; St. Augustine Fire Department; St. Johns County Fire Rescue; University of North Florida; University of North Florida Police Department; Westside Baptist Church; Windsor Volunteer Fire Department; and Wounded Warrior Project.

The equipment includes an automated external defibrillators to provide life-saving assistance if a citizen goes into cardiac arrest, turnout gear that ensures firefighters have a safe uniform and a system to teach people how to use fire extinguishers.

In 2005, Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations. The foundation has given more than $15 million in 44 states and Puerto Rico, including more than $2.9 million in Florida.

Family Foundations awarded $200,000 from Bank of America

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation and a local market selection committee named Family Foundations of Northeast Florida as the 2015 Neighborhood Builders Award recipient.

The honor recognizes the nonprofit for its efforts to lift families out of poverty through a program called “1,000 in 1,000.”

In its 11th year, the award combines leadership development resources with $200,000 of flexible funding to help increase a nonprofit’s impact in the Jacksonville area.

Greg Smith, Northeast Florida market president for Bank of America, said Family Foundations’ program is a national model for strategically addressing issues that often trap the working poor in long-term poverty.

The program addresses nine factors that help lift working families out of poverty, including quality childcare, affordable housing, reliable transportation and job training and parenting skills, according to the nonprofit.

Since 2004, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has invested $183 million in more than 900 nonprofits and provided leadership resources to nearly 2,000 nonprofit leaders through Neighborhood Builders and the Neighborhood Builders Leadership Program.

$547,000 from ‘Wall of Honor’ at Winn-Dixie

With the support of customers and associates, Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and two other grocery store brands, is donating $526,825 to Wounded Warrior Project.

During the Nov. 2-15 Wall of Honor campaign, customers were encouraged to purchase a $1 Dedication Card and write a message to a military hero.

Those dedications built Wall of Honor displays at each store, which were visual tributes to those who served, continue to serve and sacrifice for the nation.

The nonprofit’s purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

Wolfson Art & Antiques Show is Dec. 3-6

The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital has announced the speakers for its 39th annual Art & Antiques Show, Dec. 3-6 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.

On Dec. 3, the show kicks off with a sneak peek and benefactor preview in advance of a 6:45 p.m. lecture from Jacksonville native Alexa von Tobel.

Named the “Most Powerful Woman Entrepreneur of 2014” by Fortune magazine, von Tobel is a financial expert, a New York Times best-selling author and founder and CEO of LearnVest.com.

‘Bridging The Arts’ is Dec. 10 at duPont Center

The Jacksonville Cultural Development Corp. will host Bridging The Arts at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Jessie Ball duPont Center.

Bridging The Arts is a cultural event bridging local artists and businesses, as well as celebrating the unity of community members, business leaders and artists.

The fundraising event showcases African-American art, designed to promote artists and community initiatives for diversity in the arts arena.

The organization, formerly known as the Jacksonville Consortium of African-American Artists, supports an environment that will build a creative community by providing resources and support for arts and artists to flourish.

Give blood, see a movie at Carmike Cinemas

Make a difference this holiday season by donating blood or a new, unwrapped toy from 3-7 p.m. Friday at Carmike Cinemas Fleming Island 12.

The Blood Alliance will collect donations. Donors will receive a limited edition shirt and a VIP pass to Carmike Cinemas.
