Gifts needed for Angel Tree children

Through the Angel Tree program, holiday shoppers can pick up a tag with the name, age, clothing size and a wish of a child up to age 12.

The children are from families who applied for holiday assistance from The Salvation Army. Shoppers select gifts and drop them off at a designated location by Dec. 16. They will be distributed Dec. 21.

Angel Trees are up in all Jacksonville Ashley Furniture Homestores and on the second floor at The Avenues mall.

Drop-off locations include all Jacksonville Ashley Furniture Homestore locations, The Avenues mall customer service office, any Duval County Sonny’s BBQ, any Jacksonville Lee & Cates Glass location or The Salvation Army’s Towers Center of Hope at 900 W. Adams St.

In Clay County, Angel tags can be picked up and gifts dropped off at the Orange Park Mall, Dick’s Wings Fleming Island, Dick’s Wings Argyle and Sonny’s BBQ in Orange Park.

In St. Augustine, Angel tags can be picked up and gifts dropped off at the Prime Outlet Mall along Interstate 95, Publix at Mission Trace, the Southeast branch of St. Johns County Public Library, De Leon Pizza and the UPS store on County Road 210.

St. Nick visits challenged schools

Students at Brookview Elementary School had a holiday surprise through HandsOn Jacksonville’s A Visit from St. Nicholas program. St. Nicholas visited every classroom and gave the children “kindness coins” to encourage them to remember to show kindness to others. The nonprofit delivered backpacks filled with books, toys and wellness items to 5,000 elementary school children in local Title I schools, where more than 75 percent of the students are on a free or subsidized lunch plan. For some children, the books may be the first they have owned.

Campaign underway to preserve Spanish American War Fort

North Florida Land Trust has entered into an agreement with the National Park Service to assist in the preservation of the 1898 Spanish American War Fort.

It is the only remaining one of four forts on St. Johns Bluff that acted in defense of the St. Johns River. The trust has reached an agreement to purchase the property for $400,000 from its current owner, who had planned to build a house on the site.

The nonprofit land conservation organization will be the acquisition and fundraising partner of the National Park Service on the project to raise $400,000 to acquire the property.

The fort is in remarkably good condition. The property will become part of the National Park Service’s Fort Caroline National Monument and will be an addition to the interpretive and community education outreach programming.

Those interested in donating to preserve the fort should contact Jim McCarthy at [email protected] or call (904) 479-1967. A fundraiser is being planned.
