Parsec Inc. sent a letter to state officials last week saying it will lay off 55 employees in May as it shuts down operations at the Florida East Coast Railway yard in Jacksonville.

Cincinnati-based Parsec, which provides intermodal services for railroads, said in its Feb. 19 letter all of its Jacksonville employees at the rail yard at 6140 Philips Highway will be let go in a two-week period beginning May 1.

“We are hopeful that many of our impacted employees will become employed by FEC at this location,” said the letter filed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Parsec sent a similar letter Feb. 3 saying it is closing its operations at the other end of the Florida East Coast Railway in Miami, affecting 59 workers.

The layoffs at the Miami rail yard will begin on April 4.

The Jacksonville-based Florida East Coast Railway runs 351 miles from Jacksonville to Miami. Parsec's website says it also serves a Florida East Coast rail yard in Fort Lauderdale.

The website says Parsec provides intermodal services in more than 30 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
