As part of a nationwide celebration of Law Day, 26 applicants were naturalized as American citizens Wednesday at the U.S. Courthouse. Each took an oath to renounce former allegiances, support the United States and agree to bear arms when required.
President George W. Bush gave a short video welcome to the inductees.
Judge Roberto Arias, an immigrant from Cuba, spoke on the freedoms the new citizens will enjoy and the obligations that come with them.
“A lot of blood and tears have been shed to preserve our Constitution,” said Arias. “With privileges come duties. Each of you should work to protect these rights for your children and your children’s children. Get involved in your community and vote.”
