Representatives from The Salvation Army say they are in the process of adding the finishing touches to their Housing and Urban Development application. If accepted, the non-profit group will move forward on a proposed, five-story senior housing center on the corner of Main and Church streets: a work in progress for 25 years.
“We feel that our application is going to be competitive,” said Salvation Army Development Director Tania Yount. “We’re definitely optimistic and anxious.”
The grant from HUD — totaling $5 million — would be enough to cover all construction and startup costs.
Featuring 60 units, the center was designed by Arthur Schuldt, a partner from SGB Architects of Shreveport, La. Schuldt based the design off of a feasibility study conducted by the Salvation Army last year.
“Hopefully, we’ll hear back from HUD by October,” said Yount. “If we get the funding, we’ll break ground by the middle of next year.”
