Named for William R. and Frances B. Barnett, principals of the former Barnett Bank, the new children’s building at the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless will occupy 1,700 square feet beneath the Hart Bridge Expressway adjacent to the current center. Instead of an actual groundbreaking, a time capsule was filled with items related to children’s activities. It will be embedded in the new building’s foundation. Plans for the children’s center include classroom and activity space, a computer center, a small kitchen, a large front porch with rocking chairs and office space. The building will be designed like a house to give homeless children a feeling of security. A bicycle path will encircle the playground and a basketball court will be added. Of the $3.5 million needed for the project, $2.5 million has already been raised.
