For the first time in its 22-year history, the Great Race — a 4,000-mile journey across the United States — will start in downtown Jacksonville in 2004. Jacksonville served as the finish line for the vintage car race in 1997.

“We are thrilled to be the chosen city and are looking forward to this wonderful event and all it has to offer,” said Mayor John Peyton.

On hand to help make the announcement Wednesday afternoon at the Landing were representatives from the Great Race, City Council and the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission.

“The City of Jacksonville, our downtown partners and local businesses will all be affected in such a positive manner by this wonderful family event,” said Mike Sullivan, executive director of Sports and Entertainment Board for the JEDC. “Hopefully, this event will be the start of an annual downtown tradition for car lovers. Hosting an event of this magnitude encompasses a true partnership between the City, the Landing, the beautiful Adam’s Mark Hotel and Jacksonville’s downtown businesses.”
