While structural and visual repairs on the Main Street Bridge continues, Florida Department of Transportation officials say the vertical clearance at the foot of the bridge will drop over two feet Monday to allow more room for workers and equipment.
“Right now [the clearance] is at about 16 feet from the road to the lowest point of the bridge,” said Mike Goldman, a spokesperson for the FDOT. “Starting Monday, it will be at 13.6 feet. We’ll have signs out to let everyone know.”
With the drop, Goldman said he’s concerned some truck drivers won’t read warning signs and possibly clip the bridge.
“It’s never happened downtown before,” said Goldman, “but we’ve seen it in St. Johns County and at Interstate 10 and Chafee Road because people didn’t pay attention to the warnings.”
