• The mayor’s office softball showdown with the media is scheduled for Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. This year’s game is tied to Mayor John Peyton’s literacy initiative and anyone who donates a children’s book will be admitted free. They will also receive free admission to the Suns game that follows at 5:30 p.m.
• Rapper Snoop Dogg will be in town Monday at Raines High School to discuss plans for the Snooper Bowl, a charity football event that will take place during Super Bowl week.
• The Klutho Apartment Building in Springfield is scheduled to open Nov. 18. A FreshMinistries project, renovations began earlier this year.
• Jacksonville Transportation Authority executive director Mike Blaylock said he wants to work with the JEDC to offer downtown businesses incentives — possibly tax credits — for employees to use public transportation.
• The retirement reception for tax collector employee Lynn Watson turned humorous when a game of trivia began. Celebrating the year Watson began working for the City, Tax Collector Mike Hogan asked who won the Super Bowl in 1974. The room fell silent before someone yelled, “the Jags!”
• The Museum of Science and History is hosting its Dog Days of Summer event Saturday at 10 a.m. The educational event will feature local animal organizations and different types of working dogs, like termite sniffing and seeing eye dogs. Bringing your own dog is not permitted, however. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.
• Congratulations to the local chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. They received the President/Executive Award for their Image Awards event.
• The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art is offering a dance fitness class Saturday from 1-3 p.m. The class is a mix of hip-hop, Latin jazz and funk meant to provide a release from a stressful day or a chance to dance for health. The class is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.
