Another major development has been announced for Northern St. Johns County as Towers Homes Inc., has purchased a large tract from Florida East Coast Industries and will break ground next month.

The 2,168-acre parcel is between the Palencia and Nocatee developments and runs between U.S. 1 and the Intracoastal Waterway.

The first phase, to be named Kensington, will have about 300 lots and will quickly be followed by a Phase II of about 65 lots. Builders will be able to buy lots by early 2005.

The next phase, Las Calinas, will have about 350 lots.

No builders have been announced.

The parcel puts Towers literally in the middle of two of the area’s major developments. Palencia is well under development, and Nocatee is getting infrastructure work with aboveground construction to begin later this year.

The Towers property has been owned by the railroad for over 50 years and was part of a land buying campaign by the company’s president, Ed Ball. Most of the land was moved to a subsidiary, which is now the St. Joe Company, but some costal property remained with the railroad.
