Quiet, isn't it?

If Downtown is a little quieter these days, it’s because the city’s famed whistle, “Big Jim,” is the victim of a citizen’s complaint.

The century-old whistle, originally at the old Southside Generating Station on the Southbank and now in Springfield, has sounded daily at 7 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., signaling the traditional workday start, lunch hour and workday end.

A resident of Cathedral Towers complained that the whistle was in vioilation of the City’s noise ordinance and the JEA decided to shut down “Big Jim” until the situation is resolved.
