Jacqueline P. Williams is the new chair of the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women.

She owns Jacqueline P. Williams Interior Design, Inc., which she opened in 1983. Her company was named Service Firm of the Year by the Minority Enterprise Economic Council in 1997. Williams received the Small Business Owners Award in 1989 and was named 1989 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Minority Economic Development Corporation.

Other newly elected officers for 2004-05 are Joann Manning, first vice chair; Sandy L. Barata, second vice chair; and Karen Green, secretary. Five new appointees took seats on the 25-member commission in the past year. They are Tressa Kiriloff, Dr. Janetta Norman, Inga Pinnix, Diana Spicer and Tara Wildes.

The commission, which was created in 1972, serves in an advisory capacity to the mayor’s office and the community regarding women’s issues.

The commission’s purpose is to endeavor to develop a public consciousness of the talents of women, regardless or race, color or creed, as equal partners in the private, business and civic community; to encourage women to become actively involved in matters pertaining to the community; to work toward utilization of capable women in roles of leadership; and to inform women on legal and human rights, economic equality, health, and discrimination against women.
