City Council vice president-elect Kevin Hyde, who served as a last-minute substitute for absentees Mayor John Peyton and City Council member Suzanne Jenkins, offered a few words before an evergreen tree was raised 105 feet over Hemming Plaza and placed atop the new Main Library Thursday during a topping off ceremony.
“I look forward to this building’s completion,” he said. “I see it as a place where children and families can come to learn and experience a new downtown.”
The $95 million library, part of the Better Jacksonville Plan, is expected to open by early 2005.
