• San Marco pedestrians may benefit from some recently filed legislation. If a proposed land swap with Florida East Coast Railway works out, more and wider sidewalks along Hendricks Avenue will be installed. A delayed overhaul of Hendricks Avenue is expected to begin just after the Super Bowl. A bid for that work will go out next week.

• New at European Street in San Marco: an exterior paint job and an outdoor patio.

• We correct our errors and unfortunately we’ve had quite a few lately. In recent days, we’ve misspelled the names of Marks Gray’s Jerry Weedon and MOSH’s Margo Dundon. We also misstated the affiliation of M.G. Orender; he’s president of Hampton Golf, and has no direct affiliation with The Players Championship, as we stated. Our apologies to all.

• The Rt. Reverend Samuel Johnson Howard, the Episcopal Bishop of Florida and a former lawyer, will be the guest speaker at the Christian Legal Society’s Nov. 12 luncheon. The luncheon begins at 12:15 p.m. at Drayton’s in the Seminole Club. For reservations, contact Jane Arnold at [email protected] or by calling 387-5400 Ext. 34.

• City Council committees have been meeting in record time this week. The Transportation Committee wrapped in less than 10 minutes. The Public Health & Safety Committee meeting committee finished in just over two.

• Republican Party chair Mike Hightower was in a predictably good mood Wednesday despite an utter lack of sleep. He was up until 3:30 a.m. watching the election returns and then caught 45 minutes of sleep before waking up for an early-morning interview at the Supervisor of Elections Office. Hightower called it “the fastest 45 minutes of my life,” but he said he’ll catch up on sleep this weekend.

• OPUS, the symphony’s young professional group, is hosting a pre-concert reception Friday from 5:45-7 p.m. at The Grotto in San Marco followed by a performance of Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” at the

T-U Center.

• Students at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts will be honored Monday during a dedication ceremony for the floor and redesigned courtyard at Jacksonville International Airport. The students designed the courtyard floor. The ceremony begins at

10 a.m.

• Shoes looking a little dull? A new shoeshine stand opened recently in the old SunTrust Building on West Forsyth Street.
