Multi-million dollar improvements in Riverside’s historic Park and King shopping district are approximately three months from being finished.

Callaway Contracting Co. was recently granted permission by local merchants to work in all quadrants of the area, putting progress on the fast track.

A Jan. 18 completion date is anticipated.

Updating and repairing everything from utilities to landscaping to sidewalks — hexagon-shaped pavers and personalized bricks at the corners of the Park and King intersection are currently being installed — the project began in October 2003.

At that time, representatives from the City’s Public Works Department said the improvements would be very similar to those now-completed in Five Points, but on a much larger scale.

Affected businesses are said to be “very understanding” and “excited to see the project

wrap soon.”
