Pedestrians on Laura Street might have noticed something, or the lack of something, for the several days now — a missing sea cow.

On Laura Street, between Duval and Monroe streets, there is a pedestal for the Sun Ray Sea Cow designed by Patty Halas but no sea cow.

Bonnie Upright, director of community development and chief sea cow wrangler for the Otis Smith Kids Foundation, said the Sun Ray Sea Cow wasn’t stolen, it just hasn’t arrived at its downtown pedestal yet.

“The artist dropped it off this morning and it just got approved,” said Upright.

To date, Upright said 22 of the 42 sea cows have been deployed around town but the rest are soon to come.

“There will be another herd going out this week,” she said. “Four went out this morning.”

Upright said the whole herd should be out and on display by the end of October.

The decorative sea cows are the focal point of the Sea Cows for Kids art project produced to raise money for the Otis Smith Kids Foundation.
