• A brief interruption during the City Council’s Finance Committee meeting couldn’t have been better timed. Just after wrapping a debate about the lack of parking downtown, Council member Reggie Fullwood relayed a message that anyone parked behind the Seminole Club would be towed.

• A local GOP member tried to use some party loyalty to get hurricane-strewn trash picked up in his neighborhood. He told Mayor John Peyton in an e-mail that his “Republican neighborhood still has trash in it. Do you want the neighborhood to turn liberal?” He got a surprise response from Duval County Republican Party head Mike Hightower, who preached patience. “Pensacola and Mobile don’t EVEN HAVE neighborhoods,” Hightower wrote back. “Let’s give the City and JEA a break.”

• Look for the Jags Fred Taylor to start turning up around town with a teal mustache. It’s not a new fashion statement, though. Taylor will appear on a nutritional poster promoting milk, which will be distributed at the Oct. 17 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The poster will also be distributed at various after-school programs.

• City Council member Daniel Davis supported legislation that would raise parking fines downtown, but not without expressing a concern first. Davis said he wanted to be sure that people who attend various City Hall meetings won’t be improperly fined if they stay longer than they anticipated.

• A reminder from the Supervisor of Elections Office: the last day to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 4.

• Seems radio personality Neal Boortz was rather unhappy about his experiences at Jacksonville International Airport during a recent visit. He says policies at JIA are made by a bunch of bureaucrats trying to justify their existence. Among his concerns: he couldn’t find his limo because the driver wasn’t in the baggage area holding a sign with his name on it.

• The Jacksonville Maritime Museum weathered the storms brought by the recent hurricane parade. Apparently some water got into the building, which sits on the Southbank at the foot of the Main Street Bridge. But the structure and all the museum’s artifacts emerged from the heavy winds and rains intact.

• The City just put the finishing touches on a new website for the Preservation Project. The site mimics an old wooden park sign with links explaining the mayor’s plans for the City’s public parks, park maps and activity schedules. Check it out at www.coj.net/Departments/Parks+and+
