Kelly Madden, Wachovia Corporation’s new North Florida regional president, is taking her new position within the company in stride. Sure it means more responsibility — Madden is now responsible for over 800 employees — but the married mother of two says she’s been preparing herself for the role for years.
A Wachovia employee for well over a decade, Madden moved into her new office — it’s one door down from her old office — last week.
“This is really an exciting time for me,” said the San Marco resident. “If I could create the perfect job for myself, this would definitely be it.”
The reason, said Madden, centers around her longstanding history with the company. Since 1988, she has served in roles ranging from retail and commercial banking director to relationship manager for various client segments.
“With that kind of experience, I’ve definitely learned the importance of community involvement,” she said. “I feel very strongly about us giving back as much as we can. It’s my number one priority and it’s something I’ll continue to promote within the company.”
And speaking of community, what’s Madden’s take on Jacksonville’s recent commercial boom?
“Honestly, I believe Jacksonville is one of the world’s best kept secret,” she said. “We’re continuing to evolve, but as always we remain both business and family friendly. It’s those kinds of things, and of course the upcoming Super Bowl, that will take our city to the next level.
“That’s why companies like Fidelity and others want to relocate here.”
And though obviously business savvy, does Madden have time for anything other than work?
“Well, my day usually starts at 5:30 a.m. when I go to the gym,” she said. “Any other time I can spare I dedicate to my family and the activities we enjoy.”
Those activities, she said, include water sports along the St. Johns River and, most importantly, numerous t-ball games where her five-year-old son rounds out the roster. There’s also a new a puppy to look after.
“It’s a challenge but I do my best to balance my career and family,” she said. “And actually, my kids stay pretty involved in what I do, which is great. When they can, they attend grand openings and things like that.
“But for the most part, they understand that mommy works for a bank. Beyond that I just try to make sure they’re Wachovia fans like I am. I think they are.”
