• All good things come to an end and the Cowford Club is one of them. The younger set (but old enough to imbibe) moves on to other things after Thursday’s final gathering at the Chart House.
• Good news for Peter Bragan Sr., owner of the Jacksonville Suns. His son, Pedro, says he may be able to come home from the hospital Thursday morning and, if he’s feeling up to it, make it to the ball park for the Suns’ season opener.
• The change in lobbying assignments in the mayor’s office has an added bonus for the Thoburn household. He won’t have to spend as much time in Tallahassee which means he’ll be able to spend more time with wife Dearing, who’s expecting.
• Several folks at the Supervisor of Elections Office are doing something this week they haven’t had to do in a while — interview for a job. They aren’t out of work, but as appointed employees they have to interview with incoming elections chief Jerry Holland in hopes of keeping their jobs.
• Congrats to the Jaguars, whose website received the National Football League’s Internet Network Award for the Best Fan Interactivity of NFL websites as voted on by other NFL websites. Among the features considered were the message board, polls, Ask Vic, Pepsi Player of the Week and Play of the Week, and in-season contests.
• A quick follow up to a story we ran on Tallahassee legislative hotspot Clyde’s and Costello’s. Neighboring restaurant Andrew’s said they also experience a healthy spike in business during the two-month session. “It’s fantastic, comparable to what’s like for the mall during Christmas,” said owner Andy Reiss. “I’ve been here for 32 years and aside from the insane business at the restaurant, our catering service also does extremely well.”
• Jorgenson Consulting, the firm leading the City’s efforts to find a new Jacksonville Economic Development Commission executive director, may sound familiar. They’re the same group who was charged with finding a replacement after former JEDC director Mike Weinstein left in 2001. You may remember that despite their recommendation of four potential replacements, the City ultimately opted to promote in-house candidate Kirk Wendland.
• The Police and Fire Pension Fund has completed phase one of its “architectural and environmental assesment” on the historic Laura Street Trio, the Marble Bank, Florida Life and Bisbee buildings at the corner of Laura and Forsyth. The assesment will help the Fund plan for some demolition work and hazardous material removal as it seeks to develop the buildings.
