• The potential candidates for governor are making Jacksonville a frequent stop and the next will be the state’s attorney general, Charlie Crist, who’s here April 26. He’ll meet with a Chamber committee and visit some donors as well.
• The Cummer is closed through next Tuesday. They’ll be setting up and tearing down from Saturday’s annual ball and auction.
• Good deal for both. The Hyatt Riverfront puts up the Jacksonville Suns’ opponents and assigned Southern League umpires for a good rate in exchange for advertising at the Baseball Grounds.
• The local Republican Party raised $330,000 last month when Presidential adviser Karl Rove came to town to address the party.
• Office of General Counsel attorney Scott Makar will be recognized in the “Legal Elite” section of the July issue of Florida Trend magazine.
• The next Gator Bowl Committee meeting is set for May 3 at PRI Productions.
• Newly-elected Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland will be officially sworn in Thursday at 10 a.m. at the elections office. Judge Eleni Derke will preside. A reception will follow.
• Mayor John Peyton can add to his autograph collection, if he has one. He got a letter from former President Bill Clinton, who was in town not long ago. The letter’s on William Jefferson Clinton letterhead with the presidential seal. The signature isn’t a stamp, either.
• Dr. Douglas Holtz-Eakin will be the guest speaker at the River Club May 6 courtesy of Alexander Key Investments. Holtz-Eakin is the Director of the Congressional Budget Office.
• We found out why the Atlanta Braves no longer have a Double A affiliate in Greenville, S.C. Seems the club wanted the City of Greenville to build them a new ball park. The city balked, so the Braves moved to Pearl, Miss. where word is they are playing to a packed ball park every night.
• The First Coast Business Travel Association is having a lunch meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn on April 28.
• Foley & Lardner has formed a new division — the Entertainment & Media Industry Team. Attorneys Robert Bernstein and Jeffrey Jones will comprise the Jacksonville team. Overall, the new division will have 25 attorneys in Los Angeles, New York, Jacksonville, Orlando and other cities.
• President George Bush has appointed his nine-member commission that will review military bases for closure later this year and the City likes the list. The mayor’s chief military adviser, Dan McCarthy, circulated the list, which includes retired Army Gen. James T. Hill of Florida, around City Hall under the subject heading, “We are pleased w/ group.”
