Dan Shannon never expected to be recognized as the City’s top employee. The mild mannered Shannon said he was just doing his job.
Shannon, a printing manager in the City’s Procurement Department, has been with the City for nearly 20 years. During a ceremony last week, he was given the Mayor’s Award. It’s given quarterly and is among a City staffer’s highest honor.
“I got a letter in the mail a while back letting me know I had been selected and I was very surprised,” Shannon said. “I had no idea that I was being considered, but it’s a really good feeling.”
Shannon not only earned some good feelings, but some nice prizes, too.
The Mayor’s Award comes complete with lunch with Mayor John Peyton, a $350 VIP Gift Card and a weekend getaway worth $750.
“I haven’t decided where I’m going to go yet,” Shannon said. “It will be some place with some nice, warm weather, though. I know that much”
Months away from turning 50 — “I can barely say it outloud,” he said — Shannon said he plans to work at the same pace he always has. Being recognized by the Mayor’s Office will likely have little bearing.
“I’ll do what I’ve always done while I’m at work,” he said. “It wasn’t like I was ever trying to win an award in the first place. I have a job to do and I always want to do my best. There’s not very much more to do it than that.”
