Going into what appears to be a panic mode, advocates of the Hayden Burns Library have erected a display of paintings and old photographs of the soon-to-be-vacated building in the City Hall atrium. “Study the photographs and paintings of the old library. This show clearly positions the library building as a landmark of our community,” architect Michael Dunlap wrote in a letter to City Hall Tuesday. Last month, a special downtown committee selected the Atkins Group as the party that should be able to purchase the library and its Ocean and Adams Streets lot for $5 million. The developer has plans to raze the building and build a retail and residential tower in its place. Since that time, special interest groups have worked to have the building recognized as a local landmark by the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission. That designation would make it much more difficult to redevelop the old library for any purpose.
