• Fun fact about new residential high rise The Carling: each floor plan in the 100-unit building is named for a different area of Jacksonville including San Marco, LaVilla and Brooklyn. Some might find it interesting that the most expensive penthouse apartment is named for Riverside. The cheapest studio loft? It’s called “Springfield.”

• Tonight’s ArtWalk will have a musical ending as Prince Pele’s Polynesian Revue will perform at the Landing at 7 p.m. and then again at 8:30 p.m. at the after party at the Burrito Gallery.

• The Chamber’s quarterly business award was given to AmSouth Bank, which has gone from six branches in 2001 to 21 today, and has added 90 employees locally.

• You’ll be watching Dan Hicken report on sports for another five years on ch. 12/25. Just signed a new contract.

• Ace publicist Leo Bottary has left St. John & Partners for a job with a Tampa firm.

• Jaguars’ quarterback Byron Leftwich had a little fun last week with the media at the expense of wide receiver Jimmy Smith, who was in the process of giving an interview to two TV stations and a radio station. “Don’t that hot breath melt your cameras,” said Leftwich.

• Some of the area’s biggest contractors are holding a fundraiser for State Sen. Jim King next Thursday at Wild Creek Plantation on the Florida-Georgia border on Highway 17. A. J. Johns, Florida Roads, John Woody Inc. and Petticoat Contracting, Inc. are hosting the fundraiser.

• A bill is working its way through City Council that would allow retiring JSO officers in good standing to keep their badges and firearms. Officers that retire due to medical reasons will also be able to keep the items. They must also be displayed in a proper manner and can be kept by the officer’s spouse or heirs upon their death.

• Snyder Memorial Church on Laura Street is finally getting the money for a new roof. The Florida Division of Historical Resources is providing $285,050 worth of historical grant and the City is kicking in another $79,950.

• Despite serious financial woes and impending playoffs, Winn-Dixie is still the fourth-ranked publicly held company in the state, according to Florida Trend magazine. The grocery store chain was, however, the only company in the top 50 to report a loss in revenue and income in 2004.

Tech Data Corp. in Clearwater is the top-rated company.
