• The police caught the guy who broke some downtown windows earlier this week. Credit Al Dailey, one of the Downtown Ambassadors, for his help — he witnessed one of the rock-throwings and called the police.
• Gold’s Gym now has a July 15 opening date. Drywall installation starts today at the gym, which is at the corner of Adams and Laura.
• The Army Corps of Engineers and New Orleans-based Bean Stuyvesant, LLC have agreed to terms on this summer’s beach renourishment projects in Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach. The contract award is for approximately $6.8 million and the estimated completion date is Oct. 26.
• The “Anything But Politics” charity golf tournament at Bent Creek has been rescheduled for June 17 with a noon lunch and 1 p.m. tee time. All proceeds raised will go to the Trinity Women’s & Children’s Shelter.
• There’s a big fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Tom Gallagher June 25 at Thousand Oaks Ranch on State Road 237 near Lake Butler. It’s being hosted by John Coxwell and it’s $500 per person (the maximum donation allowable by an individual) to attend.
• The Chamber and Target Marketing Inc. are working together on a new street map of the City of Jacksonville. Should be out late this year.
• The Marines at Blount Island are getting a new commanding officer. On July 1, Col. James D. Hooks will take over for Col. Carl D. Matter.
• Bob Papke is the new director of the T-U Center. He comes here from Toronto, where he had a 10-month stint consulting for the Canadian affiliate of SMG, the management company which operates the facility here.
• There was a scheduling problem at River City Brewing Company last Friday and they weren’t expecting the Chamber’s Downtown Council meeting. About 40 showed up to find no breakfast, but a couple of the restaurant’s employees managed to get the room together and make coffee, and some members made a bagel run to Panera Bread.
• Expansion of the coffee shop in the middle of Independent Square’s first floor is about two weeks from being finished. They’ve knocked out the back wall and final touches are underway. They’ll sell many of the items you haven’t been able to get since the gift shop down the hall closed.
• Attorney Bob Rhodes will be named to take the place of Brad Glass on the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission. Glass, president of The Auchter Company, resigned due to job commitments.
