• The Clerk of Court’s new website launches Tuesday. It’s at www.duvalclerk.com and has the court information plus a boating safety course, driving records and notary services.
• There will be plenty of police around next week. The Florida Police and Fire Games will be here and they expect about 5,000 to compete.
• New face in the Jacksonville Bar Association office: Carolyn Drew. She takes over the duties of Kelley Gill Padgitt, who’s now the executive director of the Women’s Help Center.
• The Jacksonville Economic Development Commission still is without a leader and now they’re without a meeting. Tuesday’s scheduled meeting has been called off and the commissioners will again gather on July 14, when a new executive director may be in place.
• Jaguars Coach Jack Del Rio spices the current practice sessions with group activities. Two weeks ago, he took the team to a movie. Last week, it was bowling. This week, golf.
• Before passing the hats at the Justice Coalition’s Thursday breakfast, founder Ted Hires reminded all his guests that he’s out of work. Hires sold his four Sonny’s Bar-B-Q franchises recently. “Support from you all is more important than ever, because I’m out of a job,” he said.
• Spohrer Wilner partner Bob Spohrer will announce today that he’s representing three military families in a suit against defense contractor Blackwater. The suit will seek damages on behalf of the families of three U.S. Army members who died when their plane crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. The suit will contend that the contractor didn’t provide the plane’s crew with adequate preparation or equipment for the flight.
• A new gift of $65,000 from the Wayne and Patricia Hogan Foundation has allowed the Florida State University College of Law to increase from 60 to 90 the number of students it accepted into its Summer for Undergraduates Program this year. The law school received more than 560 applications for the current session, which began May 23 and runs through Friday.
• The installation ceremony for City Council president-elect Kevin Hyde and vice president-elect Michael Corrigan has been scheduled for Thursday, June 30. It will be at the T-U Center and the program is still being developed.
• A fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist has been scheduled for June 20 in Ponte Vedra. Cost to jon the party? $500 per person.
• It seems the parking lot for sale at the corner of Ocean and Forsyth streets is piquing the interest of a few parties. We hear a would-be buyer in Georgia wants to take a look at the property.
