San Marco is the newest location for the Marble Slab Creamery. At 2000 Hendricks Ave., the shop offers homemade ice cream and various toppings that are mashed together on the frozen surface.

Open less than a month, store owner Debbie Maisuria said business remains solid, despite the occasional bouts of cold weather.

“It’s good,” she said. “And it continues to pick up.”

A long time ice cream lover, Maisuria said it was her frequent visits to a Marble Slab in Mandarin that first stirred her interests in opening a store of her own.

“(My husband Barry and I) used to go there and the ice cream was so good,” she said. “You would see all the people waiting in line. I told my husband, ‘I want to do this.’”

That Mandarin store ultimately closed but Maisuria’s ice cream interests didn’t melt. Today, including the San Marco store, she and Barry own two other Marble Slab franchises in town. Operations in San Jose and the St. Johns Town Center will open on March 4 and 18, respectively.

“Everyone loves ice cream and we just wanted to expand it,” Maisuria said. “We really enjoy what we’re doing and we look forward to opening more stores whenever possible.”

Marble Slab was founded in Houston in 1983. Today there are more than 400 stores open in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The ice cream shop offers homemade ice cream and waffle cones which are made in the store daily. The ice cream can be combined with “mixins” of candy, nuts, cookies or fruits. Cookies, apple pie and ice cream cakes are also available.

Marble Slab is open seven days a week: Monday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. -10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.; Sunday from 1:30 until 11:30 p.m.
