Hundreds gathered at the Police Memorial Building downtown Tuesday morning to pay respect to the more than 50 officers who have died in the line of since 1840. “These are people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of Jacksonville,” said City Council Vice President Kevin Hyde, who read a proclamation establishing May 13-15 as time to remember slain police officers. “It is nothing short of appropriate that we honor them in this way.” At the ceremony, Fraternal Order of Police Nelson Cuba (left) and Sheriff John Rutherford presented a ceremonial wreath of retirement.
