• City Council member Ronnie Fussell is $1,100 lighter today after his was the winning bid for an autographed, framed Tom Brady jersey at Tuesday’s Sheriff’s Office charity golf tournament at South Hampton. Brady is the quarterback for the New England Patriots, who have won three of the past four Super Bowls.
• It’s time to “Deck the Hulls” for the 21st Annual Jacksonville Light Parade. The downtown riverfront event is set for Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. Entries are due Nov. 21 and the event is limited to the first 100 boats.
• Mayor’s office press aide Kristin Key may be making the move over to the Jacksonville Children’s Commission, but you can still catch her at City Hall for a little while longer. Over the next month Key will be making the transition to her new job from her current office.
• Council Finance Committee Chairman Daniel Davis took issue at Monday’s committee meeting with a mayor’s office proposal to pay lobbying firm The Cohen Group to continue to work on reopening Cecil Field. The mayor’s office said the firm would only be digging up information, but Davis wondered if the firm might end up lobbying for a reopened Cecil, something Davis opposes. “You and I don’t agree on this, but I’m being asked to pay somebody to work against what I believe,” said Davis. The bill passed anyway without Davis’ vote.
• Get ready for a road trip, City Council style. Curiosity about the Cecil Field debate has prompted several Council members to contemplate renting a van to travel to Virginia. The trip would allow them to see in person the conditions surrounding the Navy’s current East Coast master jet base, Naval Air Station Oceana. Council member Elaine Brown, who first proposed the idea, said the Council members would pay for the trip themselves.
• It remains to be seen how well local high school football phenom Tim Tebow can memorize a college playbook, but he’s got his Scripture down pat. After quoting the Bible to a reporter, Tebow was jokingly asked to cite the book and verse. He responded immediately, “Proverbs three, verses five and six.”
• One more Tebow note. The Nease quarterback has his pick of schools, but there might be a couple of reasons for Florida Gators to be optimistic. Aside from both his parents being Gators, Tebow lists former Gator Danny Wuerffel as his favorite quarterback in either pro or college. Tebow respects Wuerffel for his faith and his toughness. Steve McNair is his favorite pro quarterback.
