• City Council member Michael Corrigan might want to keep a close eye on his property tax bill this year after making Property Appraiser Jim Overton the butt of a joke at a recent West Jacksonville Rotary Club meeting. After Overton botched a new member presentation at a previous meeting, Corrigan presented Overton with “the Golden Shovel Award, for digging himself a hole he couldn’t climb out of.” A chastened Overton had just one question for Corrigan. “You live over in Avondale right?”
• The Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce announced the launch of a young professionals program to take place this fall. IMPACTjax will target 21 to 35 year olds who live in Jacksonville or are considering a move here. The program aims to connect young professionals with local opportunities and to help develop future leaders.
• The Riverside Arts Festival returns to Riverside Park this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The annual festival will feature more than 160 artists exhibiting works in a variety of media. The artists will compete for $10,000 in prize money.
• Sports Illustrated’s pro football preview is out and it’s bad news for the Jaguars. The mag picks them to go 9-7 (second in the division behind Indianapolis), missing the playoffs. The Super Bowl? SI has Carolina beating Indianapolis 31-27.
• Congratulations to The Dalton Agency. The full service firm took home a pair of awards during the McDonald’s Marketing Leadership Conference in Chicago. The “Best Bet Award” was given to Dalton for its efforts to enhance McDonald’s reputation. The “Mac Enough Award” was given for a recent campaign that involved the firm using a Hummer H2 wrapped in McDonald’s graphics to promoted new products.
• The next meeting of the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m.
