What’s left of the roof facade and gutters on the Market Street side of the Churchwell Building was in a dumpster Wednesday after it fell off the 101-year-old structure Tuesday afternoon about 4 p.m. One of the neighbors who heard the crash said, “It made a heck of a bang.” Since 1905, the building was the home of the Churchwell Company. It started as a dry goods business but today sells promotional items. Two weeks ago, the company moved operations to a new facility on Edgewood Avenue to allow the historic Downtown location to be converted into condominiums. The sidewalk had already been closed and roped off to make way for the scheduled removal of the entire facade around the building. “As soon as we moved out, the building started shedding pieces of itself. The building is impatient,” said owner Robert Pavelka. “It’s like me – it can’t wait to get started on the revitalization of East Bay Street.”
