• The new security cameras at the Supervisor of Elections Office have already come in handy. A carjacker was recently nabbed after someone inside the office saw the man trying to steal a car from the parking lot.

• It’ll be a double-header Friday at the Baseball Grounds but the Suns are only playing in one of the games. Before the 7:05 Suns against the Tennessee Smokies the police and firefighters will play in the 10th annual “Strike Out Crime” charity baseball game. It starts at 3 p.m. and is being hosted by the Justice Coalition.

• Our police may be getting 400 new rifles thanks to funding sources that will be put into JSO’s federal forfeitures trust fund. According to the legislation, the rifles will cost $282,000.

• The Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation is the recipient of this year’s Steve Paterson Sports Philanthropy Award and the group will be recognized at a Sept. 18 luncheon in the Terrace Suite at Alltel Stadium. The annual award is presented by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Sports Philanthropy Project to a sports team or athletic foundation for outstanding work devoted to improving the lives of others. The Foundation will be officially presented the award that night during a pregame ceremony before the Jaguars take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.

• Potential good news for those who bike. In addition to widening Kernan Boulevard, the City is looking into adding a bike lane. City Council members Art Graham and Richard Clark will meet this afternoon to talk about the proposed path.

• Big Republican gathering next Thursday at Mussallem’s Galleries on Philips Highway. Gov. Jeb Bush, his wife Columba and House Speaker Mark Rubio are expected to be on hand for the “Red, White & Blue Celebration” fundraiser. The money raised will go to the Florida House on Capitol Hill.

• The Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Duval Delegation appreciation reception next Tuesday in the Chamber’s Hadlow Boardroom. It’s $10 a person and you must RSVP.

• Speaking of the Chamber, the next quarterly trustees meeting and reception is set for Sept. 20 with Mayor John Peyton and Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford scheduled to speak. It’s at the University Club from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

• The aging Southbank bulkheads could be getting some help soon. The mayor’s office is sponsoring legislation that would set aside a little over $2 million to help repair the Southbank Riverwalk.

• In a story Monday we misspelled Circuit Court judicial candidate Thereasa Hunnewell-McCaulie’s first name.
