Two days after it was approved by the City Council, Mayor John Peyton signed the amended ordinance that changed the laws concerning parking at meters. In front of a group of Downtown merchants who pushed for the changes and others convinced the changes will prove to be a mistake, Peyton said, “This may not be exactly right, but it has the technology to modify it.” He was referring to a proposal for the City to purchase and install “smart meters” that would allow changing the maximum time limit on individual parking places. Council member Suzanne Jenkins, (right) who sponsored the amended ordinance, said the legislation to purchase the new high-tech meters will be filed in January and she expects the Council will adopt it within 90 days of its introduction.
