University of Florida Levin College of Law

University of Florida Levin College of Law’s Black American Law Student Association Alumni Reunion Weekend is Feb. 24-25. The reunion is intended to help BLSA alums connect with each other and with current students. This year’s theme is “Light of the Past, Guiding the Future.” Space for law students is limited, registration is $40. The reunion includes a gathering at the home of Dean Robert Jerry; a panel discussion about diversity in higher education; and a speech by Linnes Finney, president-elect of the National Bar Association. Florida State University College of Law

Florida State University College of Law will host a symposium titled “Law and Policy of Ecosystem Services” which is scheduled for April 7-8. The school is still in the planning process and details will be forthcoming.

University of Georgia School of Law

The Association of American Law Schools has named Beth Shackleford Kirch, the director of legal career services at the University of Georgia School of Law, as the 2006 recipient of the Kutulakis Student Services Award. Presented annually, this national award recognizes the outstanding contribution of an institution, administrator or law professor in the provision of service to students as exemplified by the late Peter N. Kutulakis of Dickinson Law School. The award was presented at the AALS’ Washington, D.C., meeting last month.

University of Miami School of Law

University of Miami School of Law and The Center for Latin American Studies will host Heriberto Hocsman, professor of commercial law at the National University of Buenos Aires, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the school’s room 109. Hocsman will give a lecture on the legal aspects of the economic collapse of the Argentine economy in 2001, including an analysis of the reschedule of the Argentine foreign debt. Hocsman’s numerous publications include two articles on the subject published in special editions of the journal “La Ley.” For more information contact the Center for Latin American Studies at 305-284-1854 or [email protected].

Stetson University College of Law

A Stetson University alumnus who is managing partner of the law firm Vernis & Bowling, which has 12 offices in the Southeast including offices in Jacksonville, has donated $90,000 to Stetson’s School of Business Administration. Attorney Robert Bowling, who graduated from Stetson in 1987, gave $50,000 to name a classroom in the university’s Lynn Business Center and $40,000 to name the center’s Roland George Investments Room. The contributions went into the center’s endowment fund for future building and technology enhancements. “The incredible teachers I had at Stetson helped me become the person I am today,” said Bowling. “The renovated Lynn Business Center is a world-class facility, and I am proud to be among the business school’s alumni.”

More from Stetson: Stetson Law’s Black Law Student Association invites residents to a celebration of culture and heritage at the Black History Festival in the Great Hall, Mann Lounge and Courtyard on the Gulfport campus Feb. at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. “I believe that black history should be celebrated every day,” said BLSA President Patice Holland. “This month in particular, the Black Law Student Association at Stetson wants to celebrate a rich black history and culture with the community.” A slide show of important moments in black history and exhibits from local artists will be on display throughout the festival. Stetson’s BLSA chapter is officially named in honor of Judge Thomas E. Stringer, Sr., the first African American student to graduate from Stetson University College of Law.

Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center

Nova Southeastern’s law school will host Minority Law Day Feb.25 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Those attending the event will have an opportunity to interact with law students, practicing lawyers and law professors. Events include a panel discussion addressing the State of Black Families in Florida and the opportunity to network with alumni who are currently working in their field.
