JALA advises on workers' rights
Jacksonville Area Legal Aid employment attorney Tess Arrington will hold twice monthly workers' rights clinics next year. The clinics will cover areas like wage claims, unlawful discharges, workers' compensation, employment discrimination and family and medical leave, among others. The clinics will be held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Beach Boulevard WorkSource office at 1 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. clinic at JALA. JALA will also offer the clinics on the third Monday of every month at the Market Street WorkSource office. Call 356-8371, extension 320 for more information.
Florida Bar president becomes "Santa clause"
Florida Bar President Alan Boukman helped the Nassau County Bar Association give gifts to area children and Boukman apparently came dressed for his role. Boukman arrived at the NCBA's Dec. 17 Christmas party dressed as Santa to give gifts to more than thirty kids while their parents, NCBA members and members of the Florida Bar Board of Governors looked on. Boukman's Santa belly came courtesy of the Ritz Carlton, which donated a pillow.
Florida Bar looks to fill committees
The Florida Bar's committee preference forms are available on the Bar website, www.flabar.org. Forms must be filled out and returned to the Bar by Jan. 13 and should include a members qualifications to serve on the committee as well as prior experience. The Bar will make appointments to committees based on: service to the Bar and to voluntary Bars; diversity of gender, ethnicity and areas of practice in forming the committee composition; prior committee participation; and committee chair evaluations.
Federal judge gets appointment
The Community Foundation has elected U.S. District Court Judge Harvey Schlesinger to serve as chairman of the board for 2006. Delores Kesler was elected to serve a four-year term as Trustee. Schlesinger serves the Middle District of Florida and Kesler is the founder and former CEO and chair of Accustaff, Inc. which is now known as MPS Group. Currently, Kesler is the chair and CEO of Adium, LLC -- a capital investment company.
Cable & Telecom workshop
Miami-based Leibowitz & Associates is sponsoring the 13 annual Florida Cable & Telecommunications Law and Local Government Workshop Feb. 2 at the Crowne Plaza Orlando Airport. The day-long seminar will cover everything from pending federal legislation to wireless telecommunications. The cost is $595, $295 government officials and employees, and the fee includes course materials and lunch, but not hotel accommodations.
