The new University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute received a $25,000 donation from SunTrust Bank last week. The specialized cancer treatment center is one of only five proton therapy centers in the United States. Proton therapy provides precise radiation treatment that minimizes damage to healthy tissue and reduces the chances of longterm complications, making it especially suited to children with cancer. The center will open in July. On hand were (from left) SunTrust North Florida Senior Vice President John Sullivan, SunTrust North Florida President and CEO John Schmitt, UF Proton Therapy Institute Executive Director Stuart Klein, UF Proton Therapy Institute Medical Director Dr. Nancy Mendenhall and Proton Therapy golf classic chair Larry Shertz.
