• Mayoral staffer Jenny Gleeson has been tabbed by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to be honored during its annual “Single Greatest Night in Jacksonville” event. The event’s Nov. 17 and it’s a black-tie gala at the Marriott Sawgrass. Between now and then, Gleeson will raise at least $1,500 and participate in a variety of events designed to raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis.
• This year’s Summer Beach Run is set for Aug. 26. The 5-mile run on the beach starts and ends at the amphitheater in Jacksonville and features a course that runs two-and-a-half miles south just into the St. Johns County line.
• Condolences to the family of former Supervisor of Elections John Stafford, who passed away Sunday. The funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home on San Jose Boulevard.
• daniel will celebrate its 122nd birthday with a June 7 bash from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at its Belfort Road campus. The day-long event will include music, games, lunch and a blood drive.
• Heisman Trophy winner and former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel will be at the Men That Matter Outreach Breakfast at the Wyndham June 10. • Compass Bank President Bob White liked what he saw from a report from the mayor’s Growth Management Task Force on maintaining the local quality of life. White, one of dozens of community stakeholders asked for their input, had one suggestion though. “Think in terms of our total population doubling between 2000-2030,” said White in a letter. “I have yet to see a report where the population projection wasn’t reached well in advance of the projected date.”
• Duval County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Wise forwarded to Mayor John Peyton a list of criteria San Jose, Calif. used to revamp its school system. The good news, according to Wise: Jacksonville is already heading in the right direction in focusing on early literacy and in expanding after-school programs.
