The Downtown Ecumenical Services Council and members of the Northeast Florida Builders Association released “Big Bubba” Thursday at a man-made stocked pond in Jacksonville’s west side. Bubba is said to be 55 pounds of catfish and anglers will have a chance to win $5,000 if they catch him during the 11th Annual Catch Bubba Catfish Tournament Oct. 14. If Big Bubba doesn’t take the bait, a prize of $3,000 is awarded to the person who reels in the biggest fish. Nearly a dozen large catfish were released into the already stocked pond. All the proceeds from the tourney benefit DESC, an emergency services ministry to the poor and homeless. Financial support for DESC comes from foundations, churches, individuals and the annual tournament. Here, NEFBA President Jerry Linder, former DESC Catch Bubba chair Traci Barron and current Catch Bubba chair Ruven Galven prepare to release Bubba, who was shipped in from a hatchery in Georgia.
