• The 8th Annual Barefoot Classic in Queen’s Harbour is April 21. The event will feature three waterfront homes, transportation to the homes via luxury boat or limousine, catered food, an auction, entertainment and the newest Mercedes Benz at each house.

• Local golfer Dave McDonie recently recorded the rare “albatross” or double-eagle. McDonie is a member at St. Johns Golf & Country and he made a two on the par 5 12th hole. He holed out from 249 yards.

• Former Clerk of the Courts Henry Cook is up for appointment to the Duval County Council on Elder Affairs. Cook is also a former City Council member and president.

• First Coast Tiger Bay will host City Council At-Large Group 2 candidates Jay Jabour and Bob Harms April 20. Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland will also be on hand to talk about the May 15 election.

• The Landing will host its annual Earth Day and Ecology Fair April 21 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. featuring more than 80 educational and interactive display booths as well as live entertainment. Admission is free. For more information, call 353-1188.

• Wolfson Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is having a linen sale next Thursday and Friday in the lower level auditorium at Baptist Health Downtown. It’s from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. on Thursday and 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday. Proceeds benefit the patients at Wolfson’s Children Hospital.

• Developer Florida Short Term Residential LLC has announced plans to begin building a 121-room Value Place Hotel at Dames Point Crossing at the intersection of Merrill Road and 9A in Arlington. The construction contract was awarded to Jacksonville general contractors FaverGray. The firm also built the Value Place Hotel on Beach Boulevard near St. Johns Bluff Road. According to a press release, “Value Place offers an affordable variety of room styles with all the amenities for the extended stay market.”

• Blast from the past: ‘80s rock band Starship, starring gold-record artist Mickey Thomas will perform at 7 p.m. April 21 at the International Flower Show and Exposition. The showcase for horticulturalists and landscape architects will continue through June 17 at Reynolds Park Yacht Center in Green Cove Springs. For information and ticket prices, call 388-2131.

• Florida Community College at Jacksonville has been ranked first in the nation among colleges with more than 7,500 students in a survey conducted by the Center for Digital Education and the American Association of Community Colleges. The study examined how colleges use technology and the Internet to streamline operations and better serve students, faculty and staff. FCCJ also earned the top ranking in 2003 and 2004.

• Breakfast business has been so brisk at Einstein Bros. Bagels at the Hyatt, the shop has added a half-hour to the day’s schedule and now has the door open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
