Firehouse Subs has launched a store-wide campaign that honors the firefighter heritage and culture. All 270 Firehouse Subs nationwide are participating in the “Hero Cup” campaign that features pictures and a brief story about that person’s heroic act.

Two Jacksonville firefighters, Rick Murphy and Phillip Smith, are featured on the first set of cups. Murphy and Smith responded to a fully-involved house fire in August 2002. They saved several people, but suffered physical damage that has limited both of their careers since. The pair received the Fireslayer of the Year Award for their efforts.

“Rick and Phillip’s incredible story signifies the true spirit of a firefighter; brave and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect others,” said Firehouse Subs founder Robin Sorenson. “We are proud to pay tribute to two firefighters from our hometown and to share their story with customers.”

In addition to Smith and Murphy, Sean Van Atter of Tampa, Robert Jacinto of San Antonio and Kevin Reck of Orlando are on the first series of cups. A civilian is featured, too, and he’s only 4 years old. On March 26, 2006 then 3 year-old Brendan Duncan Jr. saved his entire family when he woke up and realized the family’s house was on fire. Duncan got his twin sister out of bed first and then woke up his parents.

Firehouse is currently taking nominees for its next series of Hero Cups. Nominees can be firefighters, police officers or any other public service worker with a heroic story. The Hero Cup campaign will continue through the end of the year. For more information, log on to www.firehousesubs.com
