• The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville awarded Arts Education Enrichment Grants to five Duval County public school teachers providing expanded arts and cultural programs in the classroom. The grants, made possible through a sponsorship by Prudential Financial, were awarded to: Ryan Whalen, Oceanway Middle School, $500 for an extra-curricular program for up to 60 students to practice and perform jazz and blues music; Stephen Smith, DuPont Middle School, $464 for a pilot program for students in the Emotional Behavior Disorder Unit using specialized software for music composition; Barbara Craig, J.E.B. Stuart Middle School, $500 for a workshop featuring glass bead artists with demonstrations, activities and an overview of the history of the art form around the world; Traci Mims-Jones, Ribault High School, $500 for a study of Gothic architecture with related writing and printmaking activities; and Nancy Coyle DeCandis, Neptune Beach Elementary, $500 for a presentation by a master storyteller followed by related activities of mural making, songwriting and storytelling.
