Veteran stage actor Terron Brooks is on stage at the Florida Theatre tonight at 8 p.m. in Laterras R. Whitfield’s play, “ISSUES: WE ALL GOT ‘EM.”

The play, in its third week, will go to Miami Thursday and is scheduled to tour through April 1.

“It’s going really well,” said Brooks. “I love what I do.”

Brooks played “Simba” in “The Lion King” and Seaweed in “Hairspray.” He also played Motown legend Eddie Kendricks in the television movie, “The Temptations,” and on the TV show “Ally McBeal,” and is a singer and songwriter with three albums to his credit.

“My first thing is music,” he said. “I want to have a career something like Sammy Davis Jr.’s. For as long as I can be alive, I want to be working. I think the key is doing quality things.”

“ISSUES” chronicles the lives of seven people, following them through situations including infidelity and abusive relationships.

Brooks plays Jason, a full-service salon owner who stays celibate for a year, trying to find a woman who isn’t a gold-digger.

“He’s very witty,” Brooks said of his character. “And he’s a fact freak. So I have to study all these random facts that he annoys everyone with.”

The play also stars former “Facts of Life” cast member Kim Fields and Dave Hollister, a former member of the R&B group, BLACKstreet.

“She’s a delight and a light,” Brooks said of Fields.

True to its title, Brooks said, the play portrays people and their problems honestly.

“It deals with a lot of issues,” he said. “It doesn’t tie life up in a little bow, it shows it being the ongoing struggle it is.”
