The first covers Medicaid and runs from 10 a.m.-noon and is worth two CLE credits. • Jacksonville attorneys Jennifer Millis, Chad Roberts and Julie Cappiello were recently elected to the Florida Justice Association’s 2007-08 board of directors. Millis — of Peek, Cobb, Edwards & Ragatz — and Roberts — of Spohrer Wilner — were elected to two-years terms, while Cappiello of Harrell & Harrell was elected to a one-year term.
• Nine attorneys from Marks Gray were named 2007 Florida Super Lawyers: Gerald Weedon (top 100), Jeptha Barbour, William Corley, John Crawford, Victor Halbach (also named to Florida Trend’s Legal Elite), Allison Hauser, Frederick Kent III, Nicholas Pulignano Jr. and Jim Rinaman Jr.
• The Jacksonville & the Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau is looking to promote local tourism. Aug. 6-11, the CVB is partnering with local businesses to host “Experience Jacksonville: Your Florida Destination Week.” Over 50 local businesses will have coupons that week good for discounts at restaurants, sports events, hotels and more.
• Passport update. the U.S. Postal Service says it’s a 10-12 week wait for normal processing and 3-4 weeks for expedited processing. Also, be prepared to part with your birth certificate, but you will get it in the mail with your passport. According to the Postal Service, if they or the Department of State lose your birth certificate — too bad. You replace it and neither will reimburse the cost.
• Gov. Charlie Crist is chairing the 2007 Florida campaign for the United Negro College Fund. The group will be in town Sept. 13 at the Omni for a benefit luncheon.
• Downtown Vision Inc. has sent out a notice warning Downtown visitors and workers about recent thefts of purses and wallets in Downtown buildings. According to the “suspicious activity alert” the suspect is a black male, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He dresses casually, carries a bag with yellow markings and slips into secured buildings and garages behind employees with access badges.
• Speaking of DVI, City Council President Daniel Davis has nominated Council member Jay Jabour to the DVI board.
• Dec. 9 is Rotary Day at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium when the Jaguars play the Carolina Panthers. Plenty of tickets are still available. Contact your Rotary leader for more information. The Jaguars and District 6970 will each donate $5 per ticket to the Rotary Foundation for each ticket sold.
