• U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is sponsoring an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would allow members of the armed forces headed for deployment to terminate or suspend mobile phone contracts provided the deployment is for 90 days or longer.
• The League of American Communications Professionals LLC recently honored the Jacksonville Port Authority with a Gold Award in the 2006 Vision Awards Annual Report Competition. They competed in the Government category (up to $1 billion revenue). The competition drew a large number of submissions representing a broad range of industries and organizational sizes.
• More “super lawyers” in the area. Peek Cobb Edwards & Ragatz partners David Peek and Tom Edwards for their work in tax law and civil trial litigation, respectively. Also, sole practitioner Hugh Cotney was recognized.
• Barbara Jaffe, managing director of investments at Wachovia, was named one of the top 100 women financial advisors in the country by Barron’s magazine.
• Trista Wallace has been named Director of Public Relations and Marketing for the Otis Smith Kids Foundation. She will be responsible for branding the organization, developing strategic marketing and public relations campaigns and will serve as project manager for all special events. Prior to joining the foundation, Wallace worked as strategic events director for the Dalton Agency.
• Good clean fun: If you’re a fan of comedian Bruce Bruce, tickets are now on sale for his Sept. 21 show at the Florida Theatre. If you’re not a fan, you might be interested to know his press release states, “He prides himself on not using vulgarity to win a laugh, which has enabled him to do comedy that is appropriate for the entire family.” The original family-friendly comic, Sinbad, is also booked for an Oct. 12 show at the Florida Theatre. • State Attorney Harry Shorstein will host Juvenile Justice tours Aug. 3 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to give parents and their children who are 11-16 years old an opportunity to be educated about the criminal justice system.
