The Jaguars are cutting costs and one area affected is the team’s media guide, which this year has 248 pages, 120 fewer than last year. Among the features chopped out are game summaries from last year.
• The Jacksonville Children’s Commission announced that it has been awarded a new 21st century Learning Center grant from the State of Florida. The grant will fund three new after school programs from Jacksonville children. The programs will be administered at Rutledge Pearson, Pinedale and John Love elementary schools.
• Monday was the last day to either register to vote for the Aug. 28 special election for State Representative or change your party affiliation and there was at least one significant local voter who changed parties. Attorney Charles McBurney’s mother — Jeane Chappell — was a lifelong Democrat and the widow of a former Democratic member of Congress. Monday, Chappell became a Republican in order to vote for her son, who’s running to fill the seat vacated when Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Mark Mahon to a judgeship in the Fourth Judicial Circuit.
• The Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin’ Robbins in Atlantic Beach is closer to opening. A sign says the shop is taking applications.
• According to the July “On Scene” — the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department’s monthly newsletter — May was a busy month with 10,763 responses. There were 7,800 calls for emergency medical service, 1,850 fire responses and 1,113 non-emergency responses.
• The Salvation Army’s Child Development Center was recently recognized as one of the top child care centers in the area. Two years ago the Early Learning Coalition of Jacksonville created a rating system for child care centers. According to Area Commander Maj. Jim Arrowood, The Salvation Army’s CDC was one of nine centers to receive five out a possible five stars. Arrowood credited CDC Director Kristin Smith for the center’s success.
• The 2nd annual Art Walk/Pet Walk will be held Wednesday at the Florida Theatre from 5-8 p.m. The event is open to all people and their pets, and will promote pet health, pet art, pet adoptions and pet safety. There will also be a pet contest at 7 p.m.
• The Northeast Florida Builders Association’s “Family Back-to-School Bash” is cancelled. The event was to be held on Aug. 9 at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The event has not been rescheduled.
