Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Joseph Wise, Sheriff John Rutherford, Mayor John Peyton and Council President Michael Corrigan joined a group of mentors and mentees at City Hall Wednesday for the launch of “Mentor Jax.” The new program was inspired by the Blueprint for Prosperity initiative and is funded with $425,000 from the Jacksonville Children’s Commission and the mayor’s Office of Faith and Community Based Partnerships. Kesler Mentoring Connection was awarded a contract for $100,000 to screen, fingerprint and train new mentors. The remainder of the allocation has been granted to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida, The Bridge of Northeast Florida and Wayman Community Development Corporation to expand their mentoring services. Adults who are interesting in volunteering an hour a week can now learn about more than 50 mentoring programs provided through a wide range of local social and service organizations by visiting www.mentorjax.org.
