Carpenters were putting the finishing touches on a structure Monday that will allow pedestrians to continue to use the sidewalks on Duval and Laura streets while construction and renovations are in progress at the Havertys Building across the street from City Hall. A bill is making its way through City Council committees that, if adopted, will prohibit developers from closing sidewalks adjacent to their projects for more than seven days in a year. The bill, sponsored by Council member Suzanne Jenkins, cites negative impacts of long-term sidewalk closures including “inconvenience and increased risk of walking in the street to go around the section of closed sidewalk.”
