• Kim Wheeler of JEA has been elected president of Learn to Read’s board of directors for 2007-08. Wheeler is joined on the board by Dr. Margo Martin of Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Shelley Loughery of Trinity Materials, Jennifer O’Neill of the Times-Union, Earlis “Corkey” Harvey III of KPMG, LLP and Julie Pope of Ironwood Productions.

• Speaking of Learn to Read, the organization is seeking volunteers for its Jacksonville Reads Adult Literacy Program. Tutors must attend both training sessions in order to receive certification. The sessions are Aug. 2 from 5:30-9 p.m. and Aug. 4 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Learn to Read offices on Art Museum Drive. For more, call 399-8894.

• By virtue of his position, Mayor John Peyton has been tabbed as an ex officio member of the Jacksonville Symphony Association’s board of directors. He’ll be nominated at the June 13 board meeting and his term will run from July 1 through June 30, 2008.

• Speaking of Peyton, he’s the guest speaker at this year’s Good Neighbor Awards luncheon. The event is co-hosted by the Northeast Florida Builder’s Association and Jacksonville Homebuyer and is June 13 at the Hyatt. The luncheon honors builders and developers who have made a difference in the community.

• The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville is closed Monday for Memorial Day. Cafe Nola is closed both Sunday and Monday. Also, there is no Skyway service Monday.

• This year’s Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation charity golf tournament netted $265,000. Over the years, the Jay Fund has donated over $1.5 million to families with a child suffering from leukemia or cancer.

• According to Nancy Kilgo of JEA, the utility is in the preliminary stages of “evaluating requirements in the southeastern part of Duval County for a proposed electric generation facility.” In an e-mail, Kilgo said the units would be fueled by natural gas and used during peak demand.

• Re/Max is the title sponsor of The Donna Hicken Foundation Golf Classic June 21 at the World Golf Village. Funds raised through the tournament go to battling breast cancer on a local basis. For more, call 242-0034.

• Marvel Comic fans will enjoy this year’s “One & Only Genuine Original MOSH Party” June 9 at the Museum of Science and History. Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk will highlight the annual event for families. The event raises funds for MOSH’s educational programming. Tickets are $20 per person, children 2 and under are free with a paid adult. Four and six packs of tickets are also available. To purchase tickets or for more information call 396-MOSH, ext. 241.
