• Library Director Barbara Gubbin has turned down Council member Mia Jones’ request to have the rent waived for the Housing Partnership of Northeast Florida when the group meets at the Main Library’s conference center. Gubbin said she gets many rent forgiveness requests and many groups do get a break on the rent. However, she said, the facilities have to be maintained and part of those maintenance costs are recouped through rental fees. She did say the meeting rooms at branch libraries are free of charge.

• Is Council member Bill Bishop a member of the clergy? Apparently Jacksonville Aviation Authority Board Chair Jack Demetree thinks so. Demetree sent Bishop a letter explaining the importance of the runway expansion project at Craig Air Field. The letter was addressed to “Bishop William Bishop.”

• The World Golf Hall of Fame will induct its class of 2007 during a Nov. 12 ceremony. This year’s class includes two-time PGA Tour major winners Curtis Strange and Hubert Green, five-time LPGA major winner Se Ri Pak, 1960 British Open winner Ken Nagle of Australia, Irish great Joe Carr and Blair McDonald, a Canadian credited with building the first 18-hole course in the U.S.

• Big bash for outgoing Sulzbacher Center CEO Sherry Burns. The Center’s board is putting it on and it’s Oct. 2 at the Mary Virginia and C. Herman Terry Conference Center at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Attorney Audrey Moran is taking over for the retiring Burns effective Oct. 1.

• The new Jax Federal Credit Union in Atlantic Beach will hold a VIP reception next Thursday from 5:30-8 p.m. The branch is at the corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Royal Palm Drive.

• First Baptist Church Jacksonville will host the “Greatest Generation Celebration” Sun. - Wed. The conference to celebrate those 50 years and older is expected to be one of the largest gatherings of senior adults ever held in the city. Special tributes will be devoted to veterans and public servants. The public is invited and admission and parking are free of charge. For information, call 356-6077 or visit www.fbcjax.com.

• Learn to Read Jacksonville has elected its board members for the 2007-08 year. They are: Gwen Brinkley of JVD Financial Services, Inc.; Stephen Horne of Drummond Press; Brenda Johnson-Whaley of State Farm Insurance; Margaret Love of St. John’s Presbyterian Church; and Marzita Rivera-Clapp of JEA.

• The Omni will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an Oct. 8 party at the Downtown hotel. It’s from 5:30-7 p.m. The event is invitation only.
