Hurricane season is approaching so last week JEA hosted a meeting to evaluate disaster plans developed by JEA and the Water/Wastewater Agency Response Network of Florida (FlaWARN). The two-day exercise was based around a simulation of a Category 2 hurricane making landfall near Jacksonville and the sanitation and public health issues such an event would cause. JEA has more than 228,000 sewer service customers and can process more than 100 million gallons of wastewater each day – providing the 1,200 pump stations and 15 sewer plants have electricity. Participating agencies included the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), American Water Works Association (AWWA), United States Department of Homeland Security, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Rural Water Association (FRWA).
