• One Church One Child of Florida recently recognized Circuit Court Judge David Gooding with its 2008 Judicial Leadership Award for what the organization calls his “outstanding commitment to ensuring permanency for children.” Gooding was elected to the bench in 2002 and started doing dependency cases the following year.

• The Florida Association of Legal Support Specialists will hold its quarterly meeting in Jacksonville at the Omni July 25-26. The two-day seminar is themed “Cruisin’ Down the Riva” and the FALSS has applied to the Florida Bar for 6 CLE credits for all Florida registered paralegals who participate. For more information, contact Ann Kovacs at 356-1306.

• The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Spring 2008 “Work, Live and Play” book is now available for purchase. The book is a guide for families looking to relocate to the area and for residents looking to see what is in the region. Price for Chamber members is $20, non-members $35. Contact Joi Balsavage at 366-6620 or go to the “Chamber Store” link at www.myjaxchamber.com.

• If you were wondering what the fleet of school buses that has been parked near the T-U Center every day last week was all about, it was about music education. The Weaver Family Foundation was hosting 12 concerts for more than 14,000 Duval County elementary school students. The youngsters heard the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, led by Associate Conductor Morihiko Nakahara, perform Copeland’s “Appalachian Spring” and Stravinsky’s “The Firebird.”

• If you’re planning to sail or cruise instead of drive to Jaguars home games, it’s time to go online to register for boat slips reservations at Metropolitan Park Marina. Reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit www.jaxparks.com and click on the Waterways & Boating link to register or call the City’s Dockmaster, Jim Suber at 630-0839 for more information.

• A correction to Wednesday’s story about Scott Shine. Jim Minion lost in the 2007 City Council race against Michael Corrigan, not Daniel Davis.

“The two real political parties in America are the Winners and the Losers. The people don’t acknowledge this. They claim membership in two imaginary parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, instead.”
– Kurt Vonnegut Jr., U.S. novelist
